Yanek Gruener was a Holocaust survivor who was born in Poland in 1928. He was one of the few survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Gruener was sent to Auschwitz when he was just 15 years old and managed to survive the horrific conditions at the camp for over two years before being liberated by Allied forces in 1945.
After the war, Gruener emigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Toronto, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became a prominent speaker and educator, sharing his experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust with students, community groups, and organizations around the world.
Gruener was a passionate advocate for Holocaust education and worked tirelessly to ensure that the stories of survivors like himself were never forgotten. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, leaving behind a powerful legacy of resilience, perseverance, and hope.
